Mobile data drops during streaming – unstable 4G/5G connection?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been dealing with a technical issue lately and wanted to check if anyone else has experienced something similar. Whenever I’m streaming videos (HD content, usually around 10–15 Mbps), my mobile data connection becomes unstable. The stream starts buffering, and sometimes the connection drops entirely for a few seconds.

Here’s what I’ve tested and observed so far:

  • Ping spikes heavily during buffering (normally ~20 ms but jumps to 250–400 ms).

  • Speedtest results fluctuate a lot: sometimes I get 80–120 Mbps, but during streaming it suddenly drops below 5 Mbps.

  • APN settings are correct (orangeworld).

  • Phone is set to 5G/4G auto, but it occasionally falls back to 3G on its own.

  • Tried network reset, SIM reseat, and device restart — helps briefly but not permanently.

  • At some locations the connection is slightly better, but I still get random short drops.

My questions:

  • Could this be local tower congestion or some form of temporary network throttling when there’s high data usage?

  • Or might this indicate a SIM card or network profile issue, and should I ask Orange to re-provision my line or replace the SIM?

Any technical insight or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

What Your Symptoms Suggest

1️⃣ Heavy ping spikes during streaming

Jumping from ~20 ms to 250–400 ms under load usually indicates:

Cell congestion (scheduler overload on the eNodeB/gNodeB)

High bufferbloat on the mobile uplink

Poor SINR / fluctuating radio conditions

If it were hard throttling, latency typically stays stable while throughput is capped.

Your latency explodes — that’s a congestion signature.

2️⃣ Speed fluctuates from 120 Mbps → 5 Mbps

This strongly points to:

Dynamic cell load variation

Carrier aggregation dropping in/out

Device falling back from 5G NSA to LTE or even 3G

You mentioned it occasionally drops to 3G — that’s important.

That usually happens when:

LTE signal quality (RSRQ/SINR) degrades

The device loses the LTE anchor for 5G NSA

There’s a temporary radio link failure

3️⃣ Works better in some locations

That further supports local tower congestion or sector-level instability, not SIM corruption.

A bad SIM or provisioning issue would behave consistently everywhere.

🎯 Most Likely Cause (Ranked)

1️⃣ Local tower congestion (most probable)

Especially during video streaming hours. When you push 10–15 Mbps sustained, you compete with others and the scheduler deprioritizes flows dynamically.

2️⃣ Poor radio quality (SINR fluctuations)

If indoor or marginal coverage, streaming pushes the link harder and instability becomes visible.

3️⃣ Network profile issue (less likely)

Possible, but that usually causes:

Permanent low speeds

Wrong APN routing

Data failing entirely

Not dynamic buffering tied to load.

4️⃣ Throttling (unlikely)

Orange generally rate-limits by speed cap, not by inducing latency spikes and RRC instability.

✅ What You Should Test (Advanced but Useful)

🔹 Force LTE only (disable 5G temporarily)

If stability improves → 5G NSA anchor instability is the issue.

🔹 Monitor signal metrics (if Android)

Look at:

RSRP

RSRQ

SINR

If SINR drops below 5 dB during streaming → that’s your problem.

🔹 Try outdoor test

If outdoors is stable → indoor attenuation + congestion combo.

📞 Should You Ask for Re-Provisioning?

Yes — but not as first assumption.

If the issue:

Happens in multiple areas

Persists after forcing LTE

Happens even at night

Then ask Orange to:

Verify radio quality logs and re-provision my data profile (HLR/HSS refresh). Also check if my SIM supports current LTE/5G carrier aggregation bands.

A SIM replacement is cheap and sometimes fixes marginal LTE authentication instability.

📌 Clear Conclusion

This looks 70–80% like cell congestion or unstable 5G/LTE radio conditions,

not SIM failure and not classic throttling.

If you tell me:

iPhone or Android?

Urban or rural area?

eSIM or physical SIM?
